The Manas National Park is a bio reserve in Assam state of India and is home to many threatened wildlife species. It shares boundary with the Royal Manas National Park in Bhutan. Manas National Park is listed as a Natural World Heritage site by UNESCO and is a part of Project Tiger that is run by the government of India. The park is named after the Manas River and cover over 500 km² of dry deciduous forest land. As it is located on the foothills of the Great Himalayas, Manas National Park maintains a great biodiversity.
Manas National Park has 55 species of mammals, 380 species of birds and 50 of reptiles. Asian Elephants, Indian Rhinoceros, Gaurs, Asian Water Buffaloes, Barasingha,
Indian Tigers, Leopards, Assamese Macaques, Slow Loris, Hoolock Gibbons, Smooth-coated Otters, Sloth Bears, Barking Deer, Hog Deer, Black Panther, Sambar Deer and Chital can be seen inside the park. The park also provides protection to rare and endangered species like Assam Roofed Turtle, Hispid Hare, Golden Langur and Pygmy Hog.
Manas National Park is also a great destination for bird-watching as 450 species of birds make this park their home. The park also maintains a healthy population of endangered Bengal Florican. The scenic beauty of Manas National Park along with the rare wealth of wild life creates an amazing experience that is not to be missed.
The best time to visit this sanctuary is from November to April, with the best period being January to April.
Air : Manas Park is 176-kms from Guwahati. The nearest airport is Borjhar, which is situated, 5-km out of town, and can be reached by rickshaw, auto rickshaw or airline buses.
Rail : The nearest railhead is situated at Barpeta road.
Road : Buses regularly ply from Guwahati to Barpeta Road in 4½ hrs.
