About Gir Forest National Park

The Gir Forest National Park located in Gujarat state of India, is the last and only home of the Asiatic Lions in all of Asia. It is the only place outside African continent to see Lions in their natural habitals. Gir Forest National Park was established in 1965 for the protection and conservation of the decreasing population of Asiatic Lions. Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary covers over 1412 km² of land that includes 258 km² of fully protected area and the rest of 1153 km² for the sanctuary.
The main attraction of Gir Forest National Park is the Asiatic Lion. Indian leopards, sloth bears, Indian cobras, jungle cats, striped hyenas, golden jackals and Indian mongoose are some of the carnivores found in Gir Forest. The herbivores found in Gir are chital, nilgai, sambar, four-horned Antelope, chinkara and wild boar. Many bird species also find the ecosystem of Gir Forest favorable for their habitat. Vultures, crested Hawk-eagle, brown fish owl, pygmy woodpecker, black-headed oriole and Indian Pitta are some of the birds found in Gir.

Location of Gir Forest National Park

In southwest region. of the Saurashtra peninsula, Gujarat. Nearest airport is Keshad, SOkm (30miles) from the park. It is also accessible by rail from Sasan Gir (1 km, .or half a mile, from the park)on the Western Railway).

Gir Forest National Park Climate

Summer temperatures are hot and humid (43″C; 109″F);winter nights are freezing 40C, or 390F at night; 24″C, or 75″F, during the day).

When to go?

The park is closed from monsaan (June to September) till mid-Octaber. A pleasant time tovisit is December to May (although” May is hot, wildlife viewing is good).

How to Reach Gir Forest National Park

Nearest tawn, Veraval, is 42km (26 miles) away. At a distance .of 6Skm (40 mile~), Junagadh is well-connected with Delhi and Bambay by train and bus.Buses and jeeps Jar hire at the! Gujarat Taurism Office at Diwan Chawk in Junagadh.

Wildlife in Gir National Park

    Facilities at Park
    Accommodation provided by the MPSTDC (Wriite Tiger Forest Lodge) and many private lodges at Tala (Bandhavgarh Jungle Camp - former Maharaja of Rewa's palace - and Tiger Trails). Visitors may enter park in their own vehicles (petrol only as diesel banned here); alternatively hire a taxi at Tala (park entry point). Park open from dawn to dusk. At entry gate, trained guides with interpretive skills can lead visitors through the park.

    Conservation History
    Long before India got its independence, Bandhavgarh Fort was the ruling seat of the kings of Rewa. In 1617 AD, the rulers of Rewa deserted the fort and moved to a new location of Rewa town. After independence, the forest of Bandhavgarh started degrading due to negligence from the government. Maharaja Martand Singh of Rewa, after seeing the slow destruction of the forest, proposed that the forest area should be protected and conserved. In 1968, an area of 105 sq. km was declared as national park and was increased to 438 sq. km later in 1982. In 1993, Bandhavgarh National Park became a part of Project Tiger.
    Archeology
    Mythologically the fort was built by Lord Rama for his brother Laxman, during Ramayan period. There are a number of man made caves (35) in Bandhavgarh with inscriptions and carvings, which date back between about 129-168 A.D. Statues of various incarnations of Lord Vishnu, which were carved out of single rocks are found in the fort. "Sheshshaiya" the statue of lord Vishnu in reclining pose is the biggest of all and attracts every tourist. These statues date back to 10-11th Century A.D.
